The 60-second self-check

  1. 1Do you like the shape of your head?
  2. 2Is your hairline receding or your crown thinning?
  3. 3Is your hair thick or dark?
  4. 4Are you nervous about going too short?
  5. 5Do you want a two-minute morning?

Answer at least three to see where to start.

Head shape matters more than face shape

With a buzz cut nothing frames your face, so the shape of your head and the back of your skull do the work. An even, rounded head looks good at any length.

Ridges or a flat back are fine at #4 and show more at #0 to #2.

Sample face before the cut
Before
Buzz cut with a #4 guard, about 13 mm
#4 13 mm
Buzz cut with a #0 guard, about 1.5 mm
#0 1.5 mm

What about face shape?

  • Oval and long faces: most lengths work. Longer guards keep a little height on top.
  • Round faces: compare #2 and #4. Shorter often looks more defined than you expect.
  • Square and angular faces: a buzz shows off a strong jaw. Any length works.

These are tendencies, not rules. Your own photo is the better test.

The routine

A buzz cut takes seconds to style and minutes to maintain. Expect to re-buzz every two to three weeks to keep the length, or every week at #0.

If you are worried about regret

Start longer than you think. A #4 is easy to live with, and you can take it shorter the same day. Hair grows back at about half an inch a month.

Try the buzz cut filter

Works like a buzz cut simulator on your real photo. Front-facing, hair visible, decent light. We keep your face, beard and glasses as they are and change only the hair.

Your photo is deleted within 24 hours and never used to train models.

Guards to render

#1 and #2 differ by 3 mm, so they look close. That is true on a real head too.

  • Face the camera, chin level.
  • Pull long hair back if you can.
  • Hats and hoods hide your head shape.

Questions

Should I get a buzz cut if I have a big forehead?

A buzz shows your forehead fully. A longer guard like #4 softens it. Preview it on your photo first.

Does a buzz cut make you look older or younger?

It usually looks cleaner and more defined. With grey or thinning hair it can look younger, because it removes the contrast.

Is a buzz cut good for hot weather?

Yes. Short hair dries in minutes and keeps your head cooler. Use sunscreen on your scalp at #0 to #2.

What if I hate it?

Give it two weeks. A #2 grows to roughly a #4 in that time, and many people like the slightly longer stage.
